STORIES FROM THE ORBIT

Things students rarely put on LinkedIn.

The semester where you lost a group of friends you called home.

The rejection of that internship you always wanted.

The comeback from a depressive episode of feeling low!

The moment something finally clicked internally and you found your little truth!

Comparison is the theif of joy

I still catch myself comparing to others

My parents always compared me to my neighbors, classmates and everyone else around me. The people they compared me to were so DIFFERENT from me, yet I agreed, I was never going to be as amazing as them. I was never meant to be them! I constantly felt behind because no matter what I did, I could never make the society happy with what I really wanted to do. I wanted to get into the artistic field, theatre, creative schools alongside of my studies.

I enjoyed studying, I loved chemistry and did very well in all the subjects, got above 80% every single time and thought maybe one day my parents will love me and look at me with some respect. They always wanted me to produce something that translated to money. I get where they are coming from but, I never wanted my art to be monetized, I just wanted to learn it for fun, they never allowed me to continue it because studies were getting more serious.

Finals finished, I thought I did really well, until some people came to me and said 'I m going to get a 100%'. I was not the happiest.

So obviously my brain concluded: everyone has figured out life except me.

Eventually the results day came and I got a higher grade percentile compared to most of my neighbors, peers and everyone my parents compared me to. I did not feel the happiest as that was when my parents loved and respected me. It was love with condiitions, but I felt good, so I kept doing well, and kept recieving the love. Once I failed and in doing so, and that love changed to 'you betrayed us, we give you everything thatt you want and you still can't make us proud?'

I just accepted that I will never be able to satisfy my parents regardless of all the hard work, they will never believe me, I have to constantly prove them to love me. So now as an adult when someone genuinely loves me for merely existing, it is difficult for me to accept that. Which is why now I am under-confident in whatever I do, I am doing so much more than I thought I would be. I have all the financial freedom as an adult and everything I wished for, but not confidence I thought I would get. Now I make sure that I simply encourage the young generations and the new parents to never compare their children as it leads to something like this.

I am still learning how to allow people in my life, and not overthink things too much. Not everything is going to be a mind game!

THE THOUGHT I KEPT “Accepting my journey is different to others and everyone deserves to be loved without having conditions around it.”

I wanted to look cool like them!

Like... a bully

I still regret it, even thinking that I had the thought of being a bully and downsiding others would make me feel good about myself is horrible. I was so evil!

I was in grade 4, around 9 years and was friends with a group who were senior to me, they were in grade 6, they always made fun of the other girls in the parks, schools and I found that very cool. I was so happy that I was amongst the group that was simply the best because they had no flaws.

Until I was looked down upon, I thought I was in their team! They called me ugly, they made me do all their work and I would do it willingly because I was just happy being a part of the group that would not accept many people. I was bullied, they would scratch my face and say, 'you are so ugly that no one will notice your mark' and as that park started bleeding they ran away and I cried.

I realised that I was just a victim of the whole gang, I ignored all the amazing people in the school, I was ashamed of myself. I cried so much that day and my parents consoled me. They had never seen me breakdown so bad, but I learnt my lesson that day.

A few days later I wrote down everything that had actually gone wrong.

Those were problems.

“I am stupid” wasn't one of them.

THE THOUGHT I ACTED ON “Describe the problem, talk to an adult and listen to your inner voice and critique!”
